When the Chief Minister implemented the “Rural Backyard Pig Farming Scheme”, in that program, he told that the government issues many welfare schemes in the interest of the people, through which there are opportunities to increase the income of the farmers and improve the economic condition successfully.  To a large extent, these schemes are providing benefits.  He said that Meghalaya procures 18,000 metric tonnes of pork from other states but its demand is very less in the state.  The state is implementing this scheme to reduce the shortage in the supply of pork by making a plan in which opportunities will be available to raise pigs and earn income from it.

Budget of Rural Backyard Piggery Scheme

Under this scheme, a plan was made to reach the low income poor farmers in two phases, in which different budgets were fixed at each stage.  This scheme includes pig farming, poultry farming, and many more, for which some such budget has been kept –

15.18 crore fund was given by the government in phase 1 and in this program 6000 people were promised to be given four high yielding improved types of pigs.

In the second phase, the possibility of spending Rs 25 crore more was revealed because under this it was decided that zero interest loan would be provided to the societies associated with it for fattening and pig breeding.  Till now 250 pig farming cooperative societies have availed loan of Rs 43.67 crore under this scheme at zero interest.
